I have had the cabinet sitting there all year, and only just decided last Saturday to paint the back of it. I was going to repaint the room an aqua or beige, but decided a quicker and easier way of transforming the space and introducing colour was just to do the cabinet. It took half an hour and looks a million bucks!
The paint colour is Benjamin Moore Palladian Blue.
The giant fish oil painting is by Vanessa Brown which we bought while living in Bowral a few years ago. The lamp is from VT Interiors. The curtains I had custom made from a fabric I found locally. The window is 4m long so there's 20m of fabric in them.

BTW, I still have absolutely now idea how to use my new DSLR camera. I am just swapping lenses and hoping for the best, but it keeps whizzing and whirring and flipping out on me and I am anxious to do a course to work how what the heck I'm doing with it. So hopefully my photos will improve dramatically when I can do more than just turn it on!
Thanks also to Kirsten from Kirsten Krason Interiors and her fabulous blog 6th Street Design School for featuring our house in her Friday Feature post here.

It's gorgeous. I really want to try painting the back of one of my cabinets too as it transforms the whole look, I recently saw on another blog someone paint the back of their glass kitchen cabinets. I was just thinking to myself that you are a great photographer whilst looking at your images, I have a dslr 550d and my images do not look this good as I really have not clue. What camera did you upgrade to?
ReplyDeleteWe bought the Canon 650D with three lenses but really I can only switch it on, and I am determined to learn how to get off the automatic setting and know how to use it properly so I can take really great shots. Just wish I could find a course to attend in real life rather than online!
DeleteOK first comment..all these finished rooms, do you EVER sleep? You are putting us all to shame with how much you have accomplished AND with a newborn baby??? Your new name...Supermama!
ReplyDeleteSecond..this is GORGEOUS. Totally belongs on a magazine cover, seriously. Wow..you are soooo good! Love how clever you were to paint the back of the bookcase, its perfect beyond words. Your whole home is simply and positively stunning!!!! Does your family know how lucky they are to have you? Have a wonderful Sunday!!
Tina, you're very sweet, but my husband would disagree. He was so pissed off last weekend that the house is nearly a year old and I still haven't finished decorating. Drives him nuts that there are still fabric and paint samples everywhere, that there's mirrors and paintings leaning against walls and I keep moving around rooms. He doesn't get that these things take time and you want go get it right! I
DeleteFor someone that doesn't know how to use their DSLR (I am in the same boat there) you have taken some great pics of an amazing transformation. Great idea with just painting the back of the cabinet, it does look a million bucks and so does the whole room. Congrats on this and your stunning home being showcased by Kristen, I'm sure it's just the beginning. Start sending your pics to some magazines. Lis xox
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa, have already been asked to be featured in a shelter mag next year, so that should be interesting.
DeleteBeautiful room! Can you share the wall color? It reads such a nice creamy white, and whites are so difficult. Whatever it is, you nailed it! Bravo.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's Dulux Whisper White. I always use it on walls because it's a nice neutral white that isn't too cold nor too creamy.
DeleteHi Melinda, what a great job you did!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the paint job in the back of your "tall, dark & handsome" cabinet, makes all the difference!! Thank you for sharing :)

This is beautiful...great idea to paint the back of your cabinet. Love your coffee table, too. Great work!
ReplyDeleteYour living room is gorgeous! I want to move in!
ReplyDeleteThe fish painting is quite arresting - I imagine one keeps seeing different colours and brushmarks in it, the longer one looks. And your house really looks like a home now. xx
ReplyDeleteStunning Mel x
ReplyDeleteEVERYTHING you do is just gorgeous! It's such an inspiration for me.

Hi Melinda, actually that is something my husband owned before we were married. He has quite a few nice objets like that, which I think he bought in England.
DeleteWow, what a stunning transformation! Loving the painted back of the cupboard, what a clever idea! Did you have the blue coral cushion made? I love the fabric! x KL
ReplyDeleteYes, KL I had them made a few years ago when we lived in the country. Waverly have a similar fabric, and I got it originally from Kravet.
DeleteYou have done a splendid job Mel

ReplyDeleteThis is another gorgeous room. Alot of folks don't realize how a set of stunning curtains can really make a space. The placement of objects in the cupboard is really spot on.
Kind Regards
Karen
Thanks Karen, yes I think curtains are the greatest asset for a room, particularly as I like rooms to look cosy. I want to put them everywhere now I've seen what an improvement they make.
DeleteI've been stalking your blog since I saw the LR pics on instagram with the hopes of finding out the fabric source/pattern. Any insight? Do you think I could get it somewhere here in the US? The LR overall is beautiful and goes so well with the rest of the house. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteHi there, the fabric is not a fancy or expensive one, it was just something I found at our local fabric shop, and loved all the blues in it, but it is so similar to the Martyn Lawrence Bullard fabric I used in our bedroom, which was 20 times the price. It is from an Australian wholesaler called Profile. Here's the link http://www.profilefabrics.com.au/fabrics/drapery/portsea/
DeleteUnsurprisingly beautiful Mel. You really do have outstanding taste. Kx (The Blog a House Built)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely haven of peace, calm and blue and white! So grown up and pulled together and so unlike our own living rooms. What a wonderful job you did, Mel.
