Rugs

I am always looking for the perfect rug, actually I need about five to really finish off various rooms in the house, but I never seem to find what I want at the price I can afford here. Typical! I need a few smaller rugs for the bedrooms which are really just finishing touches, but also a couple of rugs to help resolve my decorating issues in the main living areas.

Next problem, I need really big rugs, like 3x4m, so I'm already up against it to begin with. In my constant battle with deciding on colour schemes and the direction I'm going with my decor, I think one of the best ways to lock in a look is to have a rug as a jumping off point and from there your colours and style are pretty much decided for you. But I don't want to spend $3k+ on a rug, particularly when I need several and the options here are few when it comes to anything desirable for the $500 mark.

Ikea is usually a great place to get cheap rugs, but they don't have the size I need in the colours I want.

Of course, there are countless fabulous and affordable rugs online, but they are not exactly cheap to ship. So even if you find an online retailer prepared to ship rugs internationally I'm almost too scared to find out how much freight will be.

Has anyone had any experience shipping rugs from the US or anywhere else here?

Safavieh always comes up with the goods, and a search online today proved no exception. Their rugs are often for sale on Overstock too. I found a heavenly selection today at their website, any of which would be a great asset to my house. I stayed below the $1000 mark. They do ship, so I might have to bite the bullet and at least get one for the foyer, so I can tick one room off the list.

Which do you like best?

By the way, I just can't seem to get anything done! Despite the fact that Amelia sleeps a LOT of the time, the days just disappear and I get to the end and think "what the hell did I do with my time today?"

She's not a demanding baby at all, and is very settled and relaxed, but after feeding, settling, putting to bed, getting her up, nappy changing, some cuddling, rocking and enjoying, there doesn't seem to be much time left for anything else. I don't even have the other two around to blame it on.

My grand plans for finishing off the house are disappearing by the minute, and the house looks more like a bomb site every day. There are piles of washing, mail, bills, homework, ironing, shopping, breast pads, toys, baby stuff from one end of the house to another. Furniture is randomly placed everywhere, paintings and mirrors lean against walls with no place to go, piles of empty photo frames choke up shelves, fabric samples and paint chips are strewn across every surface, half read decorating mags lie discarded on tables, brochures and quotes sit idly by.....

So who knows when I'll ever get around to doing it all.........but bub's already four weeks old and I can hardly believe how quickly it's gone. It terrifies me how fast, and she's moved up a size in clothes from 0000 to 000 already. So sad, they are newborn for such a short time. So it will all have to wait, because time won't.

  1. I love all the rugs you showed Mel. Wow what a choice! Can't believe the bub is 4 weeks already! Glad you are enjoying your time with her. Not sure if this is a solution for you as I know you desire colour and pattern underfoot but buying length you want x one broadloom metre (3.66m) of carpet... best you can find, and having it edged is the cheapest way of getting a bit of large-scale luxury underfoot. eg 3 metres of any carpet @ broadloom price would be under $1200.(You'll struggle to find carpet OVER $400 b/m). x kl

    1. Great idea KL, thanks for the tip. I had forgotten about that as an option, but yes even getting the sisal in the right size that way would be cheaper. Just need to find a patterned carpet I like.

  3. Hi Melinda
I had exactly the same problem trying to source rugs in Australia, in particular a large one as I need 3.3 x3.4 m. I ended up getting some carpet (I just did plain but you might find a pattern that works) and getting R&b overlocking to cut it and trim it in a dark contrast cotton binding about 5cm wide. It is quite effective and cost about $600 including delivery. David (I think that was his name?) was really helpful in sourcing the carpet.
I also can relate to an unfinished house. We moved back in after our major renovation when my kids were 2 months and 20 months old and now, 5 months later, all the cupboards I just threw things into saying I'd sort it later are exactly the same! It doesn't help that I haven't had more than 3 hours sleep in a row since Christmas. It is so frustrating though when you can't get to tasks that you would have knocked over in an hour pre children!
All the best with it. You blog and house has been a major inspiration to me and I recently recommended your blog to a friend who is about to do a hamptons style rebuild in Narrabeen.
    Cheers

    1. Helen, great idea about getting carpet cut to rug size. Didn't think of that. I feel better too knowing that I'm not the only one struggling to finish houses and get things done. It's nearly school pick up time and all I've done is make a coffee, answer a couple of emails and the day is nearly done. I was going to make curtains and cushions, paint a wall and do some shopping, but there is just no way. I think I will have to put all this off until next year!

I was quite happy with the selection on a Design show in Melbourne last week.

  7. I rather like Wyndham, I think it would look quite nice with your fish painting, or did you move it? Have you checked out myus.com for shipping? I have no idea how expensive it would be to ship a rug though.

  11. are you wanting the rugs for a look or for comfort ?
i find great things at thrift stores-
and maybe they are smaller than i want or less colorful
but i can usually find something to work for a while during which time i search for the final rug-
and the older rug can be resold

  14. Hi Mel,

I LOVE your blog! I stumbled across it after googling for some stuff for our house renovation. I too am a new Mum trying to renovate our new home (just up the road from Balmoral - loved your pics there!) and am obssessed with finding quality inexpensive items so I can do more for less (I am sourcing rugs at the moment!) We too need rugs for each of our rooms to cover the floorboards in our 3 bed house. I have walked all of Sydney (and Qld) trying to find some rugs and thought I would let you know what I have found... Your beautiful rugs above remind me of the gorgeous rugs at Tsar Carpets in Alexandria but they are expensive $3k +. I found some lovely patterned rugs at a home store (like the Cameron and Newport above) in Danks St, Waterloo (sorry I cant remember the shop name but do remember the lady told me they had another shop in Willoughby Rd). I do remember the rug brand is Armadillo and Co (are online) and the rugs are quite reasonable in price ($1k+). I fell in love with a rug at Coco Republic but with my obssession to get cheaper prices I sourced the rug company, Bayliss Rugs, in Qld and went to their showroom. I managed to get 3 gorgeous rugs (3x4m for $1950, 2x3m for $690, 2.5 x 3.m for $2.5k) getting a trade discount (and a few thousand per rug cheaper than at Coco :) Also the ecochic website has a gorgeous rug like the Chatham above in a few colours. Lastly, the Pappaya shop in Mosman had the cheapest 3x4m rug that I saw (only $700) - nice natural sisal looking rug in 3 colours.
Good luck with your rug hunting! Keep us informed in your rug progress as I still have 3 rugs and a hallrunner to get!

    1. HI Caitlin - you're an angel, thanks for taking the time so give me your tips on rugs. Always welcome a suggestion or recommendation. I am familiar with Armadillo and in fact their Casablanca rug is the one I have my eye on. Can't decide on the colour though. And the hemp rugs they have are great too. Haven't been to Tsar Carpets but sounds like I should go, and Danks St always have something worthwhile. Will check them all out. I just can't seem to decide on a colour scheme so that's making it hard to pick a rug as a jumping off point. Decisions decisions....
