The fish painting will move into the living area and will help me settle on a colour scheme for there. It will be replaced by a mirror. The legs of the Ikea cabinet will be cut down as it's too high and dominating (perhaps even painted white) and what's on top will be rethought. I have since added a pair of pineapple lamps as it was in need of some soft lighting, and I can never have too many lamps, plus I ordered two bamboo chairs, but it's all too much and just doesn't feel cosy or welcoming enough. So back to the drawing board!
I was going to do a pretty Benjamin Moore inspired beigey/stone wall colour, but I just can't go past grasscloth as a way to inject some colour, texture, personality and style into this space. Plus I'm completely obsessed by it. Sadly it's fiendishly expensive, so I won't be able to do the area I would like to (ie the whole house!), but if I only do the dominant walls in the foyer, and perhaps even instal some wainscoting or a chair rail I will hopefully only need a few rolls.
This is the Kravet grasscloth I'm considering. It does come in a lovely soft aqua but I think I need to add some colours other than the various shades of blue that dominate the house.
Check out these amazing grasscloth and other woven, textural wallcoverings and you'll see why it's so hard to go past.

If money was no object and you could add one decorating detail to your house, what would it be? Mine is definitely wallpaper in every colour, shape and pattern.

Beautiful choice. I love the warmth which grasscloth gives to a space. And, in the words of one of my clients for whom we are currently installing some "if we get hungry, we can pretend to be cows and just chew on the walls!" (My client is a wag, I hasten to add.)
ReplyDeleteHave also recently done the entry to another home in charcoal grasscloth, and am tickled pink with the result. Luckily, the owner is too!
I love grasscloth wallpaper and can't imagine ever getting sick of it. It is the perfect way to add interest to the walls, without adding a pattern you might be sick of later (that said I would gladly add multitudes of patterned wallpaper to my house if I had the right place!).
ReplyDeleteI think the colour you've chosen is perfect and will look fantastic with white wainscoting and blue accessories. xx
You and I are so on the same page it's scary. The pic of the Sydney house with the large botanicals is in my files (originally from HB or House & Garden??). When we redo our foyer I am thinking of heading down that path also, my only concern being the 'seams' when it lines up......
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your revamped foyer - it (decorating) never stops does it??
Mx
Never stops, particularly when you're pregnant and your brain doesn't seem to work the way it once did. I'm hoping post birth I will regain some clarity and my decision making ability and the ability I had to decorate a space without it taking six months and several attempts!
DeleteHi Darla.
ReplyDeleteI tried to comment on your last post from my ipad but it wouldn't let me.
Anyway, I think removal of the fish is s good idea. I love that bamboo/Chinese orchid/blue and white china look you had in your bedroom. It was the post where you made the shell shadow boxes. I think you are almost there with the hallway. I love the grey of the ikea chest as a contrast to the blues. Agree a great rug as a statement piece will make all the difference.
I see you have a ticket to blogopolis. Are you up for it?? I'd love to see you there.

Melinda, I love grasscloth wallpaper so much, but had put it out of my mind due to the expense. Now, the fire in my heart has been reignited!!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be a great choice for your foyer.

Another awesome post, so many beautiful pictures to study and pine over. Now I need some grasscloth wallpaper, oh yes, I will find somewhere!
ReplyDeleteBTW My baby is now 10 months and I still can't make up my mind on anything from dinner to paint colours. The problem is I admire too many different styles, I really need to pick one and stick with it!
Good Luck, Can't wait to see what you do, no doubt it will be fantastic!
Oh don't tell me that! I was hoping all my problems would be solved when the hormones settle and I get my mojo back! Maybe I'll have to employ somebody to make decisions for me! Arghhhh!
DeleteOh grasscloth would be so stunning in a foyer! Love the idea of doing it with wainscoting as well. x
ReplyDeleteOK another sighable(not sure if that is a word)post Mel, sigh sigh sigh. If money wasn't a factor then my decorating detail would be YOU and a blank cheque book. Oh what fun it would be, well for me anyway. Loving the posts and hope the pregnancy isn't too taxing for you. Eagerly awaiting the next post. Your friendly stalker Tracey xx
ReplyDeletethe grasscloth wallpaper is gorgeous but for a cheaper option why don't u paint the wall in an indigo navy blue and bring in coral coloured accessories (cushions on chairs)...x
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing a silvery grasscloth for our master bedroom so I love your inspiration, Mel. Hope you are well and have a wonderful weekend!

Wow Melinda..so many stunning examples..had it in my old house and loved it, gives texture and color without feeling like too much.
ReplyDeleteYour entry is spectacular! You have such superb taste.....anything you do is going to be spot on, I just know it!
Hope you are feeling well.....
Love them, definitely the darker versions for me.... Means you can really notice the texture x
ReplyDeleteDo you know......I actually like yours the best.
ReplyDeleteIt's so fresh and light......perfect for an Aussie interior.
Maybe it just needs a whatsamajiggit fiddle leaf fig? in a big pot.
or something really dramatic like a LOOM rug and coloured artwork?
Personally, I really love it the way it is!!!
Have a lovely Saturday evening,
Tania xx
