Now for today, lesson one in buying from overseas.......
DO NOT BUY TAPS FROM OVERSTOCK.COM.
As you all know I was a big fan of Overstock for their prices and service, but I take that all back now. Not only do their products stink, their after-sales service does too.
Here's Exhibit 1 - our ensuite vanity taps. I noticed the other day a slight rusty coloured mark appearing around the base of the tap and staining the marble. I was able to take off the tap because it had been coming loose, and reveal this beneath. The whole thing has rusted. Now I'm sure it's happening on all the others too because you can see the slight staining happening already on the left, but of course I need an imperial allen key to get the tap apart and can't get my hands on one anywhere.
When I got the plumber over, he confessed he had cut the corners off the silver nut at the bottom (why they would use a metal that could rust for a tap is beyond me anyway!) because it didn't fit under the polished chrome cover and that's what has rusted. So do I blame the tap company for sending a part that didn't fit and could rust when exposed to water, or the plumber for mucking around with it and causing this problem?
Not at all pleased. So the only thing I can do is somehow open all the taps up and let them dry out, then cover them in silicone and hope that does the trick until the problem comes back. Otherwise I'll be up for two sets of taps plus installation!
Exhibit 2 - the kitchen pull-down mixer with dual spray nozzle. The rubber attachment to this has been coming off for a couple of months now, and we just kept putting it back on. But now it just won't stay and it drives me nuts. You can still use the tap, it's just a bit fiddly and annoying and looks crap.
So I wrote to Overstock.com in the hope of getting a replacement head for the tap. I didn't ask for a refund, or a whole new tap, I simply wanted a replacement faucet head. Here's their response....
Thank you for contacting Overstock.com to let us know of the difficulty you experienced with your order. I apologize that the faucet head is defective.
I would like to inform you that we cannot send out pieces or parts, for international orders.
Please accept my sincere apologies for any disappointment or inconvenience we may have caused. I hope you will give us another chance to provide you with the service you expect and deserve.
If I may be of further assistance, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

So I said I was pretty pissed off and disappointed and no I wouldn't give them another chance, as now was their chance to give me the service I deserved, and by the way I had a blog and would not say nice things about them anymore if they didn't send me the one piddly part I needed! This was their response....
I would like to inform you that we do not send replacements for International Orders, nor do we send our parts or pieces. Since the item is past our Return Timeframe, you may set up the return for the item for a refund, but you would only receive a partial refund, and you would be asked to pay for the item's shipping on its way back to our warehouse. There is no way to foresee how much of a refund you will receive, since that is up to our warehouse upon inspection of the item.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance on this or any other issue. I hope you will visit us soon for great savings on name-brand products.

I was absolutely seething at this point. Then my husband suggested using the US Shop n Ship address I had. So I sent that to them, requesting the replacement. Here is their response....
Unfortunately it is too long past to do a parts request on that order since it was over six months ago I am sorry. We have a 30 day return policy on all orders. We could make an exception since it from 6 months ago and offer a partial refund to keep the item as is or you can return it for a partial refund (of 50% refund) but those are the only two options available at this point. I do not have any manufacturer information we are not provided with th at you could try searching online to see if they are willing to offer any type of warranty on the item.
I then asked for the manufacturer of the tap, because is says on their website it comes with a 10 year warranty, but they refused to give me that information! Moral of the story, be careful ordering products from overseas that can break or be defective, because there's a chance you will have no recourse if something goes wrong, and it becomes a doubly expensive exercise when you end up buying the stuff from Australia to replace it. I am most annoyed because I have recommended Overstock to many of you and had thought their products and service were reliable. Apparently not.
I can however say, that Pottery Barn were fantastic replacing one of the bathroom scones. I ordered two Nash scones and one came without the backplate, so it couldn't be installed. I just asked for another backplate to be sent, but they sent me a whole new light straight away, no questions asked.
Check out Exhibit 3, photo courtesy of my five year old!
I have been doing a lot of painting since the weekend, trying to tart things up and commit to my reinventing programme, including a number of items I bought on Ebay. It's proving a little tricky given the size of me now, as my belly is sticking out so much it makes it hard to get close enough to the table and it keeps touching the painted surface. No idea how people with really big guts get on all the time, it's so cumbersome! And I'm not even 6 months yet!!!
But I'm thinking of giving it up anyway, because not only am I hideously impatient and get sloppy when it becomes too hard and I get bored, but I'm not sure that using enamel spray paint is the best idea when you're pregnant!?! At least I can say I tried.

Hi Mel, firstly you girl are looking good with baby on board. I am feeling guilty that I recommended overstock to you. I have not had any problems with my taps(faucets) since they were put in over 12 months ago, so sorry that you have had problems. I was about to order a set of taps from them, but now will buy local. Regards Tracey
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad Tracey, you weren't the only one to recommend Overstock, and and I'm sure it's fine for things that can't break eg rugs.
DeleteWOW, that service really sucks. I feel for you, super frustrating! I am glad you posted that this week though, We are currently building on and renovating and I was considering buying more taps and lights from overstock. I have bought one tap and haven't had any problems ....... yet, fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteYour belly is gorgeous, hope your feeling well.
Looking forward to seeing your projects, finished or unfinished, lol!
you may have just saved me - i was about to order a new canon lens from overseas as it's $250 cheaper but i think i'll just buy one here with an australian warranty.
ReplyDeletegood luck with the taps. I hate it when tradesmen change things and void your warranty. i think i'd be asking the plumber to pay for it. although weird that it didnt fit in the first place.
cheers fiona
Yes, I think for technical things with parts and things that can go wrong you are better off spending a bit more and getting the peace of mind of the local warranty and service.
DeleteOhh dear! I am from the US and have bought from Overstock before {while living in the US} and have experienced the same issue. Never going there again. Now that I live in Australia, I TOTALLY feel your pain with buying from overseas... It's hard because if you're lucky, you can save a TON, but if you have a problem, it's not worth sending back usually. I've had issues buying from my favorite stores because I have an Aussie card now, which is EXTREMELY frustrating! Good luck with the taps, they were gorgeous~and I love the marble! Hope it all works out!

Wow Allison, interesting to hear that the same thing happened to you while in the US, when they were using that as an excuse not to send me replacements. Such a bugger, because it's so much cheaper over there, but risky with things that can break and be defective for after sales service and warranties.
DeleteOh no! I am so disappointed for you, both about the taps and the poor service. Thank you so much for sharing this information as I was considering using Overstock for our next project. I'll be sticking to the local companies from now on! I can recommend Brodware, we used them for both bathroooms and the kitchen mixer and have had only 1 small problem. They had a courier around the next day with a replacement. No questions asked. You are looking fabulous as well! x
ReplyDeleteI saw the Brodware stuff at the time and thought it was lovely, but I wanted something a bit different and was being a cheapskate thinking I was saving lots of money. Typically as it turns out with these kinds of mistakes you end up paying more in the end. Local warranty is not to be overlooked.
DeleteAlso, just asked my husband about the SD card, he suggested turning the whole screen onto it's side and trying to tip it out! Thought I would pass this on as he is supposedly an IT person! If you do decide to give this one a go maybe ask your husband to do it! Anyway, it is just an an idea! x
ReplyDeleteTell your hubbie I tried that and nothing happened. Can't even hear it jiggling about inside, which is a worry because I think I've done so much poking about in there with various implements that I've pushed it further in. Anymore ideas?
DeleteHe says stop sticking stuff in there straightaway as he is worried you might damage the disc drive. His advice is take it to the Apple shop in Chatswood Chase. Make a booking so that you are not hanging about for ages. Not much help sorry!
DeleteYou Tube saved the day. I found this clip and it worked. Saved me a trip to the Apple Store. Yeah! Thanks for your help. Sahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpwDfpH4hR0
DeleteClearly these guys have never heard of Donoghue v. Stevenson. Remember the snail in the bottle case. We may complain about stuff here in Australia, but I think we are in a much fairer society and consumer protection laws are clearly more rigourous and better respected by retailers here.
ReplyDeleteI've learned a great lesson with this post. Thanks for sharing you must be so flipping angry.
Hi, I loved your sink which is on overstock, and I see now that slashed across everything is US ONLY! but written across the top as huge advertisment is "now shipping to the UK", Well what is the point if you cannot buy anything!!
ReplyDeleteOverstock, Overated.
Hi Mel, how annoying for you. Please tell me you haven't had any problems with your kitchen pendant lights as i am just about to order from Shades of Light.
ReplyDeleteKate
Hi Mel,
ReplyDeleteWow - what can I say?
The design of the taps you have selected are so lovely (I have been ogling over them!) - but what a disappointment. I really feel your pain. I had looked and looked at the "overstock" website - admiring all the beautiful styles (and prices!) that we never see here and been so tempted to purchase.
I am so glad I didn't (but sad for you). I really hope you manage to sort it out.
What I do know, is that rust and marble aren't a good mix. Hopefully you can remove that stain (and sort out those taps!)
I have ended up getting all of our taps for our renovation from 'Astra Walker'. Australian designed, owned and made - and they are just gorgeous. Most of mine are from the "Edwardian". "Olde English" and "Signature" range - very classic and elegant. Their web-site just doesn't do them justice.
They now produce a lot of their taps in polished nickel (and, for an additional fee, can produce any of their range in this finish). I cannot begin to tell you how much I love them. Their service (though nothing has gone wrong) has been impeccable. We needed some of the in-wall mixers (for the shower) urgently and they posted them directly to me (beautifully packed and at no extra cost) by the following day (which was Christmas Eve!). Apparently they are extending their range in the next few months (just waiting for WELS ratings, etc I heard) - and introducing even more "Classic English" and "Hampton Style" taps (including Kitchen Bridge style taps, I think). I cannot recommend them enough.
I know that Greg Natale uses them a lot (I think they are in the latest "House and Garden" mag). They are really reasonably priced, too.
But thank you so much for sharing your awfully disappointing experience (just wish you didn't have to go through it!) I certainly won't be tempted to use Overstock now!
In far happier news - you are looking gorgeous! Hope all is going well with your pregnancy. You look perfect for 6 months.
Take care and good luck again with the taps,
(Sorry, am completely clueless with the computer stuff. I don't even know what an SD card is!)
xx
Nothing worse than cut and paste answers for customer service responses!,.... But very US.. You are looking fab, we need a catch up x
ReplyDeleteI posted on their facebook page last night, three times because they kept mysteriously disappearing, and they finally contacted me wanting to help. Watch this space!
DeleteTried getting it out using a magnet???
ReplyDeleteOh Mel how fustrating!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting us know. You look great and you like your on a mission in that cute apron!!

I'm so sorry they didn't work out for you. Such a bummer. And i can't even imagine being that pregnant again...hang in there!
ReplyDeleteStacy
You look fabulous! I am so sorry you are having such a horrible experience with an American company.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more on your advice to NOT purchase taps from Overstock. Or just about anything else for that matter. Regardless of where you live.
The name Overstock wasn't chosen for the way it sounds. Overstock "buys" what manufacturers have too many of in inventory or "stock". Why do they have too many in stock? Not because they made too many....because they couldn't sell them. Naturally this raises the question of why was the manufacturer unsuccessful in selling these products? The reader at this point may continue this line of reasoning in the privacy of their own thoughts....
If you paid for the taps by credit card, you could dispute the charge.
On your vanity taps, if the water is from splashing and not leaking from the valve stem, then the "silver" nut should be replaced with a round one in the correct size so it does not have to be trimmed which compromises the protective coating. And a more liberal use of plumber's putty on the inside rim of the base is always helpful. I love your term "imperial alien key"! In the states it is called an allen wrench. One should have been included with each faucet.
That edge detail on your backsplash is so beautiful!
I hear your pain Mel and am disappointed to hear of the poor after service you received. I was particularly shocked that they wouldn't forward the manufacturer's details given the 10 year guarantee! I had a bad experience with shipping from Barney's NY and am now much more cautious with my US purchasing. Once bitten, twice shy, right?
ReplyDeleteYou look fab BTW!
x KL
I hope you have been able to sort out the problems with your tap. I too am quite keen to try my luck with taps from the US (although not from Overstock.com) as I just can't get past the greater range of finishes and styles available there. I'm just wondering, aside from the rusting/breakage issues, were there any other difficulties with importing tapware? I'm just wondering if plumbing dimensions, water volume etc are different? Did your plumber have any issues fitting the taps? Would love any tips you have on the practicalities/installation/WELS rating side of things.
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on which taps you buy so it's hard to tell. I bought several kinds from the US, some our plumber was able to convert, and others I had to throw out! Our water pressure is different, the ratings are different, they are in inches etc. There is no WELS rating on them and they are strictly not certifiable by council because they don't have the proper ratings or compliance, if you are going to be really fussy about it. Just depends what your plumber is willing to do and what you're prepared to risk re DA approval etc. I can't advise you on that, but best to discuss with your plumber and see what he says.
DeleteThanks for that. I'm now actually looking at a range that is available here, but at a totally exorbitant price that we can't even contemplate spending. From US suppliers it is less than 1/3 the cost. I just need to find a tame plumber who can advise prior to purchase I guess. Hmmm, it is so tempting to save so much, but then if they end up getting thrown out followed by a rush to purchase local replacements it is a rather costly mistake. How are your taps going a year later?
