If only there was a furniture fairy....

If only there was a furniture fairy that could magically produce all the wonderful and reasonably priced furniture items that I lust after, but that are only available to those lucky gals who live in the US, oblivious to the fact that a plethora of fabulous and well priced, even cheap, home decor stuff is right at their fingertips. They don't sit for hours on computers for months on end like we do, well into the wee small hours researching, drooling, pining and agitating over products that are "exactly what we're looking for" at the price we can afford only to have to ultimately accept that although it exists somewhere in the world, it doesn't exist in Australia and therefore cannot be ours. Does this agony sound familiar?

Now that I have progressed from eternal building frustration, ie not being able to find the tiles, lights, fittings, handles, hardware etc that I wanted/could afford during the renovation process, I am now at the equally frustrating decorating process, which proves to be even worse. There is so much stuff in the US that is amazing and affordable, whether it's lamps, fabric, bedding, furniture, rugs, mirrors, artwork etc and it is so readily available online and in stores, and you don't have to spend a lot to get great design. ie Wisteria, West Elm, Ballard, Pottery Barn, Target to name a very few. You can buy it cheaper retail in the US than you can buy a similar thing here wholesale. Go figure! I found this recently on Etsy.
I know freight, population etc all have a huge impact, but there must be a solution. It's my mission to solve this problem for all of you fellow renovators and decorators who simply can't find what you want/can afford here, if it takes me the next ten years to do it!

So, as I am currently hunting for the right barstools, dining chairs, rugs, bedside tables, lamps, fabrics, blinds, mirrors to name just a few of the things I need to finish off the house and I have a minuscule budget to do it, I have been spending an unhealthy amount of time researching on the internet. I've been scanning EBay, the trading post, Ikea, every online furnishing/decor shop, e-tailer, retailer, wholesaler and yet....still no closer to completion. Then I torture myself and go back to the US sites/blogs and find just what I want. UGH!!!!!!!!!!

This is what I mean.....if I had a furniture fairy this is just some of what I'd wish for.....

Simple enough request don't you think? Not unreasonable? Do you share the same frustrations? What do you wish you could find here but can't?

PS please don't admonish me for having an opinion on my blog (yes, you anonymous commenter!) - I think I'm entitled to have my say, even if you think I'm whinging!

  1. hi Mel - I'm so with you! I think that's part of why i started restoring old furniture. New furniture is so expensive, generally poorly made or way over the top expensive. I could help you out with a drop front desk with the book case above. i see these quite often at auctions. also i just found out we have friends in common (Stuart and Leanne). Small world.
    cheers Fiona

  2. It is frustrating especially when you are trying to work to a budget - there's only so many times you can look at the same things in the same stores :(

  3. Oh Mel, you have no idea how much I share your pain! Maybe we need to go on a shopping trip together. I spend hours looking at stuff I want but can't have here in Australia.

  4. Hi Mel, I have been following your blog now for a couple of months, and I must say that it is a highlight of my day when you post. I, to get so frustrated searching endless sites and local shops, we are in a rural area which is even harder to find the look and finishes that are needed to decorate on a limited budget. Perhaps we need to go o American gift fairs and bring back this look to Australia. Thank you for always delivering beautiful images and inspiration. Chrissy

  5. Hi,

On the furniture, I work in the design side this side of the pond in the UK making bespoke furniture. The factory employs 95% cabinet makers from NZ and OZ as we have found them to be exeptionally skilled! You may want to try hunt a few of them down as they only work here 2 - 5 years(try the kitchen companies they usually do more than what they advertise)and see if they will give you some reasonable prices to make up the furniture and here is the huge plus - to a size that fits your house perfectly and sprayed to any colour you choose. We can spray to match anything so I am sure they will too! Hopefully a solution to the furniture delimma.

But, I do spend an awful lot of time drooling over Pottery Barn lights and rugs - quality at an affordable level, sigh dream.

  6. Aaaggghhh - I feel your pain. Reading your posts can be bittersweet Mel as you hone in on stuff that I love too and there are always beautiful pictures. Everytime I read one of my fave US house mags e.g. Coastal Living, Elle Decor or House Beautiful I identify things that I would love to own and would buy in a heartbeat - they seem to come at a fair price and often with free delivery!. How I hate how much we get ripped off here or expected to put up with inferior look alikes that are really poor quality - glorified chipboard or way too rustic timber products. I once bought a coffee table on line from a well known company that looked the part - parquetry timber top - fairly rustic that suited a country style house but it was so rustic that I got splinters from it and have fantasised about how it would make great firewood one day if I was ever that desperate. I was so disappointed. I am confident that in the US it would have been twice the quality for half the price. Ggggrrrr...

  7. Oh Mel, it is so #@%%#^%^&$%^#%^#%^#$%#^%#%^# fustrating!!!! I feel exactly the same way and waste a lot of time trying to find great pieces for my clients. Lights is a big one, mirrors, rugs….the list goes on. You may be able to get Lincoln Brooks to help you out with some cane pieces. You can say whatever you like as we all do. You say it as it is and that's what's refreshing. Take it easy. x

  8. Hi Mel, Well I'm not usually one to comment on blogs (Sorry!) I really felt the need to let you know I agree with wholeheartedly. I'm always dreaming about the fantastic furniture and homewares items you can get in the States, but we have no hope of getting any of it here. It is so frustrating to check out sites like One Kings Lane and see a beautiful mirror, like some you posted pictures of, for $200, and we have nothing comparable in any shop or website... Ooohhh the misery of not having any American homewares stores here - they brought out Gap, can't we just have some West Elm as a start?
Oh and as for your comment on the anonymous commenter - it is your blog, you say whatever the hell you like!!! Great blog, keep it up :)
Cheers, Jac (from Balgowlah, just so you know where some of your readers are from!)

  9. Hi Melinda, I feel your frustration. You have such impeccable taste and creativity I am sure you feel stifled at times. I know you will come up with some wonderful design work, you have thus far!! Hang in there sweetie. Kathysue

  10. Hi Mel,
    I totally feel your pain!
I would love that "Furniture Fairy" to wave her magic wand here!
In the meantime, I agree with Fiona ("LilyfieldLife") - it is a great idea finding old furniture at Auctions. Sometimes no restoration is even required. I have picked up a few lovely items that appear barely used (perhaps just a change of heart after purchase?) - from Adelaide Auction Houses. It does take a little time (but, compared to the ridiculous amount of time I have spent trawling US homewares stores, it is nothing!) - but the benefits (in both price and range) can be worth it.
I haven't yet seen the range "in person" (but I think they have a Sydney Showroom?) - but the "Cafe Lighting" range seems to have a few items that might suit your aesthetic. I think they may be wholesale only. Worth a look is the "Boyd Floor MIrror", the 'Stockton Buffet" and the "Mercer Chest".
    Just a thought!
Good luck - hope all is going otherwise well. Lovely to read/see a post from you again!

  11. You need to check out some Asian furniture places, there is one here in Melbourne which has some gorgeous furniture - not too expensive and in the range of colours you've shown here. Also there's no reason why you can't get an old chest of drawers and paint it that colour too. Write a list, put it out there and BE specific!! You will be amazed at what will turn up - I found some cushions on Esty that were very reasonable :D

  13. Hi Mel, I too have felt your pain. I can brighten your day though...you can purchase the Caitlin Wilson cushion at adornhomewares.com.au (just google it if I have entered the wrong address). I can't tell you how excited I was when I found her cushions at an Australian website, and they are a reasonable price!! xx Lynette

  14. So definitely very true! The US and Europe have so much more variety and choice than we do here in Australia. Cavit & Co. are having a SALE at the moment with 20% to 70% off. Some prices come down to just below recommended retail US prices and the furniture items are in Australia!!! Woo hoo! No shipping costs from the US!

I too become extremely frustrated when trawling the internet looking at gorgeous interiors with fabulous finishes and furniture that are simply not available in Australia. I've gone to great lengths to import stuff (tiles, cabinet hardware, fabric and now - lighting). Getting things custom made seems to be the only option I've had in the past (apart from Cavit & Co.'s sales).

There's definitely a niche in the Australian market for good quality furniture without the high price tags! A shopping trip to the US sounds like a great idea. Take orders from everyone, load up a container and bring it back home for all to enjoy!

    Good luck!

    xx

  15. I am quite shocked that someone would be rude enough to criticise your opinion on your own blog. Ridiculous! Not so supprising is that they did so anonymously. I totally empathise with your post today, even though much of my 'wish list' is of a different aesthetic. I have noticed though that the retailers here are slowly introducing some US styled / hamptonesque homewares and soft furnishings so maybe it will slowly trickle into Australia. Select Johnathan Adler pieces are here for example. I was wondering though if the fabric couldn't be purchased OS and shipped here reasonably to constructed here into your desired soft furnishings?

  17. If its any consolation, I miss Australian chocolate :)

I moved to the US from Australia almost 20 years ago; that was back in the pre-Internet days, so there wasn't as much temptation, but I do remember devouring all the copies of the US edition of Better Homes & Gardens at my local library in Melbourne, and wishing that I lives in the US.
