I have to admit that I'm not proving to be a very efficient unpacker. Mostly because I keep stopping to look at things I unearth and read magazines or books I rediscover, and then I get distracted and forget what I was doing and start something else, heading off in a completely different direction on a new task. So nothing is getting finished and I seem to be creating more mess than anything else. This is of course causing no end of frustration to my husband, who would unpack and decorate in a day if he could.
I did have great joy yesterday when I opened a box full of old US decorating mags that I had been keeping. My husband's eyes lit up when he saw what he thought was finally a box full of something that could immediately be chucked out. But I grabbed them off him in great haste and declared defensively that I hadn't been keeping them for two years for him to throw them out now! Goodness me, does he not understand the concept of collections? Whether it is my blue and white china, my pewter, my silver, my shells, my decorating books or mags, my candlesticks, shoes, cushions, glass domes, vases, salad bowls, coral....yes, I have more than one of many things, and yes I need more than one. That's what a collection is darling - more than one! It's kind of the whole point!
So now I have found all my wonderful collections of lovely things, I am trying to find ways of displaying and styling them. It's hard doing this when you haven't really settled on placement of furniture etc, but it's the fun part and hard to resist.
So I've been trawling the internet, the blogosphere, my files and mags looking for inspiration and ideas. Here's the direction I hope to be heading....Sorry if you're not a fan of blue and white, but most of what I own turns out to be, well, blue and white - who knew!

I just took this photo to show you what I'm currently unpacking. This display is by no means complete or permanent, but it's a tiny corner of the house that I quickly put together to show some of my lovey things and it makes me smile. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
What do you collect? Do you have clever ways of displaying things? How to do you continue to grow your collection without drawing the attention of a disapproving husband?
a collection.......something that is collected; a group of objects or anamount of material accumulated in one location, especially for some purpose or as a result of some process: (source dictionary.com)
I collect hobnail milk glass in white and pink. White ceramic jugs. Blue and white ginger jars. Apothecary Jars. Cake Stands and Footed Vessels.
ReplyDeleteYes I'm a maniac.
I'm with you...LOVE blue and white. With the odd splash of another colour (for me at the moment I'm slipping in a touch of summery yellow).
ReplyDeleteWell you will think I am just saying this to be polite - but I'm not, it's quite true - my favourite image is the one of your tablescape. Just a lovely mix of things, with the greenery adding a touch of freshness. Don't start me on collecting. Our house is BULGING from my collections. Depression glass dishes, brass vases, pretty teacups, handbags, teapots, the list goes on... oh but it's so hard not to! Virginia x
ReplyDeleteYour collection is looking beautiful. Adore blue and white so much, I don't think it could ever go out of fashion!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to have found your blog via A Country Farmhouse!
Oh Melinda your collections sound beautiful, the table is lovely, those pictures have certainly put a smile on my face and made all the wrinkles leave my forehead. I have just re acquainted myself with my crystal collection, I have been adding a few pieces, DJ's have a fabulous sale. It puts a big smile on my face.x
ReplyDeleteLOVE this post but I am sure its no surprise! I was laughing as I was reading about the "exchange" between you and hubs. That could SO SO SO be me and my darling husband. He would get rid of 80% of stuff and just the other day, he flipped because I had a huge box filled with papers, magazines, tears outs from mags...and I told him no way was i parting with those. I love looking back on them, and the good ones never ever get old and always give me such great inspriration! I am such a collector...OK besides my collection of bags and shoes, I love and collect blue and white, started to collect antique limoges, silver, books, staffordshire dogs, hum...am sure there is much more, I will find out and get back to you when I start unpacking! I can so relate to your way to doing things..I am exactly the same way!!!! Cheers to collections, and KEEPING them!
ReplyDeletePS YOUR collection (last picture) is stunning and magazine cover ready!
ReplyDeleteWTF? You just got back and now I AM BEHIND? I'm gonna get a glass re-fill before I scroll back through your posts. x KL
ReplyDeleteYour collection is definitely blue & white but Coral & shell frequent it as well.

You sound like me when I'm cleaning the house - all of a sudden the cleaning doesn't get done but the reading does! I think the only collection I have is of unfinished projects which I aim to tackle this year. Glad to have to back and blogging, Mel!

These are gorgeous collections, Melinda, and the Karen Robertson Collection is amazing. I so understand the protection of your tear sheets...can't bear to part with all of mine. Happy Friday!!
ReplyDeleteI am so thrilled to have you back blogging - I just love your style and following what you are up to! Can I say first that your house is looking stunning - and I love the fact that you have posted photos of it not yet "ready" (as in with boxes, etc) - as this is reality (although it looks just beautiful, even in it's less-organised state!) I adore the colour of your dining area - is that Dulux "Spanish Olive"? Stunning.
ReplyDeleteAs far as collecting goes - I am a bit of a minimalist, and have no trouble parting with items that I have collected that I don't love (I had a huge cull when we moved). What I did keep, however, where items that I loved when I bought them, and are truly "me" - and I still love them (and know I will always love them.) They will be with me forever. These are - creamware/Leedsware ceramics, architectural prints, crystal, ginger jars and plates. (By plates, I mean painted, decorative plates. I use them propped on mantels, hung on a wall, or placed horizontally on a vignette).
Actually, maybe I'm not a minimalist....
All of your images are just stunning - beautiful inspiration. Especially the final one....
Looking forward to following your blog in 2012!
I know what you mean about moving from one task to another.
ReplyDeleteThe maps they sound great. Can we see them some time. PS can you recommend a good place to get a very large unlaminated world map in black and faun tonings.
Carolyn xx
Melinda, you know how much I love love blue and white, this post was pure eye candy, and I agree, you had to keep the magazines. I have a collection too. I got the white wooden magazine holders from the container store and they look quite nice on the bottom shelf of my console table!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad your well and back into the swing of things.
ReplyDeleteGotta luv blue and white!!! House is looking fab and it's lovely to fall in love with your things all over again.
Here is what I do to a get few extra things in the house so hubby doesn't file for divorce.
It's coming up to your birthday, you purchase or layby item or items and drop prior to your big day. Ding dong your girlfriend/s comes over and low and behold she/they have a gift for you and it is exactly what you wanted!! Gee they know you well…… You could say that your followers sent you a gift to say thank you for making our day.
Hang in there and remember what a fab job your doing.
A
