We are now getting to the pointy end of the renovation, when I am having to make rushed and panicked decisions and the budget seems to be spiralling out of control and I feel like my head is going to explode! It's 6pm and I'm already half way through a bottle of wine!
I'm an impatient, cranky, irritable mother, a testy wife and generally unpleasant to be around! I have said it before and no doubt I'll say it again - I want my life back!
This is when things become dangerous and the results threaten to diminish. All the trades are coming in and out so quickly trying to finish off, and I am having to produce things and make decisions on the spot and then I don't have the luxury of time to spend on research and quotes (say 3 months for lights, and about the same for taps) in this pressure cooker of a renovation.

| Pool cabana is coming along nicely |
 |
| Pool waterline tiling nearly done |
 |
| This tile is amazing. It is pearlescent/metallic and takes on different tones depending on the light |
 |
| Best part is that it absorbs heat during the day and glows at night! Disco cool. |

| Deck fencing coming along. |
Today I regretfully cancelled my beautiful aqua bamboo pattern Kravet wallpaper, not only because I had pressure from the builder to decide if I was going to do a tiled wall behind the bath or the original timber paneling but due to budget constraints. Feeling the pressure from all sides I gave in and agreed to have a tiled wall behind the bath and skirting and just paint the walls, although my original vision had been to have white painted timber paneling, aqua bamboo pattern wallpaper with my bamboo inspired light fitting from the US. But this is not to be. Plus I am saving about $480 on the wallpaper and $1100 on the hanging. So at least there's a plus. But my disappointment is huge. This is where I feel the dream is starting to slip away and I am making compromises just to get the wretched house finished.
The builder and the painter seem to be clashing about who is making more mess, the plumber has declared that he can't fit my latest 3 sets of imported taps from the US because they have come fitted to a bridge which has to be mounted behind the gyprock, so that's a waste of about $780. In haste, I rushed out a bought the first taps I could find at Bunnings. Can you believe it - talk about the sublime to the ridiculous! Someone has scratched my newly revealed marble vanity top and the marble tiles in the bathroom are looking worse for wear. In summation, today I'm over it.
Only problem is that I imagine they let quite a lot of light in, so perhaps not ideal for a bedroom if you want complete darkness and I may have to add curtains.
So now I just need to source them and get some quotes. Anybody have a good supplier of bamboo blinds?
I was passing by Adairs yesterday and this bedhead caught my eye. It only comes in a queen, which doesn't suit me, but I thought it was a nice dark brown timber and perfect for a coastal or country setting.
Oh no - I really feel for you! All that work researching and buying taps for that to happen :(
ReplyDeleteLove those blinds, I think they can look fabulous!
I was at recollections today and thought of you, LOL.
Hope tomorrow is a better day on the reno front.
Congrats on the award - thanks for thinking of me! This is a cool bed for Adairs - it would be perfect in my beach house! I love the pool tile - it will shimmer in the sunlight! Try not to sweat over the small stuff - there are always minor hiccups & disappointments in a reno but everything comes together in the end. Once it's all finished you can have a laugh at the mishaps you had along the way - they all make good dinner party stories!

The pool tiles are heavenly. Can't wait to see it all together. Good luck with it all...
ReplyDeleteI am a mum of two young girls, a frustated wannabe renovator/interior designer and a freelance writer for homes magazines and newspapers. I just wanted to say what a fantastic job you are doing on your reno. I love your relaxed, classic, elegant style and I can see this house is going to be a knockout! All the best for the completion of the reno. And I would LOVE to hear from you if you happen to not mind having it publicised at a later date. Becky
ReplyDeleteHi Melinda, I agree with Melissah, all the stories make for great entertainment. I built our house three years ago and I'm still amusing everyone with my stories. It will all come together and look gorgeous.x
ReplyDeleteOh you poor darling! I hope it is reasuring to you that everybody has days (several perhaps) during such a major, and fast paced renovation. The beautiful wallpaper can come any time later but my heart breaks for you re your tapware. I'm sure you exhausted all avenues of possibility before resorting to the quick Bunning's fix. Bloody budgets! And the crunch seems to always come and bite your bum when and where least expected! Arhhhhh!
ReplyDeleteFinish the other half of that bottle, tomorrow is a new day. Focus on fixtures that can't be changed to finish 'dream' worthy and remember that it's just a house. You'll make it a home when you live there and realise how much you have achieved!(Says Moi who's living on concrete floors with 150sq m of marble tarped on my deck!)LOL!

I know your pain. I built/renovated a few years ago and just to get them out of my house, I compromised on everything, I remember thinking I can live without my hardwood floors if these guys will just GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! Somethings can be done later like wallpaper and replacing taps but somethings can't. I have so many places where I need lights but I am not willing to tear apart my walls and ceilings to get them in now. Also the stairs came in wrong but I wasn't willing to wait 3 months for the right thing so I live with it. I could go on and on but it just takes me back and makes me miserable, if I drank I would be having one right know just thinking about it and it isn't even 9:00 am!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about the wall paper, but it sounds like its going to be gorgeous! Construction sites are never easy. Stop by soon, Im hosting a giveaway!

Melinda, I hate this part of a reno. It is normal, but none the less frustrating. I think you will love everything once it is done. I hate getting to the point of saying, just get it done! We creative types need to feel creative and detail is our middle name, so I totally understand your frustration.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think the contractors forget that they are working for US. I know I have felt at times that i was working for THEM!! Hang in there. I love your style and your choices. That tile on the pool is amazing. It really lights up in the night? That is crazy-good!!

PS I have matchstick blinds in my master from Home Depot and I got a black out liner for my day sleeper, it is not quite dark enough so I hung an inside mount black out shade to pull down. It works perfectly!! Kathysue
Hi Becky - thanks for your comments and encouragement. Feel like I've been a bit of a whinger today, to hoping tomorrow to feel renewed interest and full of vim and vigour! Love to talk when the house is done, so perhaps email me at the address above. Mel
ReplyDeleteMel, the pool tiles are amazing, and they go so well with the travetine. Can't believe it about the taps - what a massive disappointment. Maybe you could display them as object d' art! AnXox
ReplyDeleteYou're making me more nervous by the day since we're tackling a pretty big project next year... looks like having a case of wine on hand and being a tad flexible is the best plan! Love the tiles in your pool and don't listen to the hubby - bamboo blinds rock. Hang in there!

P.S. We're not as glamorous as you think but let's do dinner in NYC and compare notes.
Looks like an exciting building process, the tiles are so pretty! And I had to laugh when I spotted the parrot in the dining chair.. a little unexpected =) LOVE bamboo binds too!!

Take deep, cleansing breaths and this too shall pass. Unfortunately, renovations have their ugly side. You can get many of the bamboo shades with blackout liners on the back as an option, so they can be used in a bedroom. Here in the US, one of the big online sellers of these shades is Smith & Noble. I don't know if this will work for you, but you could also try googling "bamboo blinds." I am sure you will find some suppliers that way. Good hunting.

Hi Mel, have just sat down to read your blog(my daily addiction)and could just cry! You poor little love I know how frustrating it is when you have to put aside what you want solely to accommodate budget and builders!! The thing with you Mel is you could be given a hessian sack and you can turn it into a stylish item for the house that we will all want. I have no doubt like the other girls have commented that the house will still be spectacular!!!! Today is a new day, big deep breath and make the most of it, you can do it!!! We are all here if you need us. Remember there is nothing that a good bottle of wine can't fix. Also many thanks for the suggestions for my son Oliver's room have ordered from Pottery Barn. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to say thank you but we are in the throws of the HSC and School cert. trials here so life is a little hectic. Chin up girlie! Tracey
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for your encouragement and support. So nice to have at times like these when I feel like I'm imploding from the stress. But today is a better day and I'm not so overwhelmed by all the drama. After all, there are more serious things in life to worry about than a silly renovation. So perspective and a lot of work achieved at the house today has improved my mood no end. That doesn't mean I'm not half way through a bottle of wine again, but hey it's Friday! Mx
ReplyDeleteHang on and keep onto those buggers. I've renovated a few houses and those men will try and push you to the side and do what they feel. Be strong and tell them how it is with a cup of tea for them in the other hand.
ReplyDeleteKeep going it will look fabulous!!
Good luck with it all Melinda, hopefully the fact that it has gotten so hectic means that it is all going to be finished soon?
ReplyDeleteIt will all be worth it in the end, just think how fabulous it will be sitting in the cabana beside the pool in the summer time sipping on some bubbles :-).
I think the bamboo blinds look fantastic, although I agree with you that they wouldnt be good at keeping the light out in the bedroom, I know my fiance would be very unhappy with them as he is a shift worker - not so good for midday snoozing!
The pool tiles are dee-vine!

It is all about how to set off Bamboo shades in home at different circumstances.
ReplyDeleteBuilding a house is hectic. Thanks to that, the experience becomes a very good source of fun stories. In the end, one can look back and appreciate all the time and effort put in the construction.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, so far everything looks quite fine. From the pool to the blinds, each item complements each other uniquely. Combined together, they make a very pretty house.
