Dining Room Dilemma

I have been obsessed with lighting lately, because it's the one thing that is causing me huge frustration. Well, apart from the tap situation and the tile situation that is. I have been trying to find sconces for the bathrooms and bedrooms in Australia, but just can't find anything that I really love. So I ordered some from Pottery Barn and the freight I'm paying is ridiculous! I've been trying to find exterior lights, but can't find any that are simple and classic and affordable so am about to order them from Restoration Hardware, and although I have found a number of pendants and chandeliers here that would be suitable for the dining room and the stairwell, they are far too expensive for consideration in this budget.

I have signed up to the online freight service My US ShipnShop and have just placed an order with an online lighting company for an amazing selection of lights which I am hoping will arrive here at some point. I've paid for them, so hopefully the company aren't frauds and the goods arrive in due course.

In my search for a fabulous light for above the 3.5m dining table I have been looking through my inspiration files repeatedly looking for ideas and, well, inspiration. I am tossing up between a glass lantern, a wrought iron chandelier and something shell or coral like.

As it's been way too long since I posted some pretty pics, I thought it was high time I shared some prettiness.

These last two chandeliers are my current favourites. I love the shape, the materials, the textures, design, scale and think they are nice blend of a pendant and a chandelier. And something like this would be perfect above our simple and solid timber table with a coastal feel. I can't find one I can afford, so maybe I can be resourceful and make one?

All these dining rooms are stunning and sheer perfection in their own right, but I'm sure you'll agree that the light absolutely makes each one and each would be slightly less spectacular without it. Shows you what clever designers put them together and each knew how to pick just the right light in size, proportion, style and material. And I reckon the bigger the better!

Which is your favourite?

  1. Hi Melinda, sorry about the 'test' but I needed to fix my settings to enable me to comment! I've used MyUS forwarding service without any problems. I've found the site to be completely trustworthy and easily contactable too. Be very careful of the freight costs though as they are excessive. They use both physical weight and dimentional weight. (Both are explained on their website) A large but very light box of Lego cost me $200 to ship here. (negating any savings but OK as I couldn't buy it here). Also 1 in 3 items are opened by Australian customs, a seperate charge of $50 if you're chosen! (A nice little earner!)I love your blog and enjoy viwing your posts. Good luck with the lighting search; I'm struggling to find contemporary, minimal styled outdoor and internal wall lights that are fluro or LED to meet Basics requirements!

  4. Fabulous lights are as difficult to track down as comfortable heels. But I found some gorgeous feature lights at The Country Trader. They also have photos on line, Amber
