Creative Craft - My former life!

I'm not one to obsess about my blogs stats, in fact I forget to check them most of the time, and to be honest don't really understand what they mean. I see one stat for followers, another for subscribers, another for pages views and yet another for clicks, and it's all double dutch. But I did notice that my most popular post of all time, by a country mile, is a candle craft project I posted when I first started this blog. I thought that was really strange, given I mostly post about interiors and decorating and our house. So it amazed me that this would have had the most attention. I don't know if the stats are wrong or skewed for some reason, but I thought maybe I should do some more posts about craft and went in search of some of my past work. I hunted through boxes of CDs and files, and finally found some pics, although most of my best work was done on polaroid before digital photography was the only way to go. And the best is still in storage.

So here's a sample of some of the work I did for Australian Better Homes and Gardens. I approached them about a wedding concept I had for the show, where I could be the wedding planner and they could run a competition and give away a wedding designed by me. They agreed and the project went ahead. We advertised for a couple, and they chose the winner (which I actually disagreed with, but that's another story). It was about three months of planning and filming and a lot of hard work, but I loved it and the results were amazing.

The content in the magazine stretched about three issues and about 100 pages of editorial copy, and wedding craft. This accompanied the BH&G TV show which filmed the whole process including the wedding. I'm still searching for the photos of the wedding reception which were stunning and guess what, a blue and white theme. I think they're in storage, so will have to get back to you some time with those.

Here's what I came up with for some of the craft projects, which I made and styled.....in case you can't tell I was heavily influenced by my craft idol, Martha. The quality isn't great because they are scanned polaroids, but you get the idea.

So there you are. That's some of what I did in my former life - well, before kids and husband. Boy do I miss the creative outlet. But I'll get back to it soon.

  3. Good Morning Melinda, Thanks for such a beautiful start with my morning coffee(just got all three children on the bus, no mean feat by any means). I have to agree with Kathysue, you surpass Miss Martha!! This post also came at the perfect time, as my girlfriend will be hosting her son's wedding early next year, and all on a very tight budget; so thank you for some great ideas. On another note my two sons are playing rugby at Oxley College this weekend and we will be in the Southern Highlands for the day. Any suggestions as to where we can go for lunch or afternoon tea? I really love your blog and look forward each day to see what you have to say! You really are quite addictive!!

  5. To Be It Ever So Humble - firstly thanks for your lovely comments. Glad to know your'e enjoying what I'm doing. Now re Southern Highlands - if you're in Bowral for a casual cafe lunch then we go to Mezza Bar in Corbett Plaza or Coffee Culture (behind the cinema) or Elephant Boy (on the main drag). If you want a more country experience then the wineries are great, such as Centennial Vineyard in Bowral, Southern Highlands Wines in Sutton Forest and McVitties outside Mittagong. If you want a relaxed country pub experience then you can't beat The Brairs between Bowral and Moss Vale. But for a scones and tea kind of afternoon experience, then Berrima is probably the way to go as there's lots of little country cafes there that do that kind of thing. Hope it's a nice weekend, we're down there also. Enjoy!

  6. Thanks so much Melinda. I have taken note of all your suggestions, and as we will be there all day I will try to sneak away and do morning tea between matches. Although wineries sound great I'm not sure our school would approve of us taking the boys and some of the boarders with us to those! Will have to wait until my husband and I can sneak away for a quiet weekend on our own to do that. The Pub sounds great for a hungry hoard of teenage boys! Hope you enjoy your weekend also! Thanks again. Tracey

  11. All great ideas... and let me tell you, I did - last year - a post on napkin folding (101), and that post continues to rank high, week after week, much to my surprise!
There is something to be said for DIY and other crafty ideas, I'm just usually not the one that does them... LOL!
